So you know those times when you’re walking down the street and some guy starts talking to you, and you’re not sure if he’s about to get creepy or if he’s just being friendly? The kind of thing where you don’t feel threatened and would like to be polite but don’t want your politeness to be seen as flirting? I’ve found that calling the guy “man” really casually when responding defuses the situation pretty well. It’s like a switch gets flipped and the guy is like, “oh, she’s not interested, but she’s still civil,” so he’s not upset, and I don’t feel threatened or obligated to keep talking or worried that he’s going to do something creepy. I don’t use it every time, because sometimes the guy really is creepy or I don’t feel like I’m in a safe area or whatever, but when I do use it, I feel like it helps.
